On top of this, his parents are unsympathetic, and his father is abusive and terrorizes the boys to keep them in line. Home life isn’t always a respite: A male babysitter sexually abuses both brothers, and Craig later feels intense guilt for not being able to protect his little brother. 7/8/2023 0 Comments Tropic Moon by Georges SimenonA recent issue of Bookforum has a fantastic article by Luc Sante on Simenon that opens with this provocative image: As equally as off-putting as the sheer number of titles he wrote was the question of how good any of these books could be if he was cranking them out one after another after another.Īnd not just cranking them out, but making a show of it. What most caught my attention-and most intimidated me in terms of picking one of these up-was a statement from the íAbout the Authorë section: íGeorges Simenon (1903-1989), wrote over 400 novels and collections of short stories and sold hundreds of millions of copies of his books in 55 languages.ë Four hundred novels! Sure, Joyce Carol Oates is prolific, but she doesn’t hold a candle to Simenon. I had never heard of Georges Simenon before New York Review Books brought out Dirty Snow and Tropic Moon back a few years ago. I love Kate and Vincent (especially Vincent), and their fate and romance has been intertwined with what happens in the rest of the series. This book has become nearly about all the romance, but it works in this case. And when they destroy Vincent's body, Kate only knows of one way to get her Vincent back. Not so luckily, Vincent has no idea where they're holding his body. Luckily, they have a special connection where he can keep in contact with her when he's in hibernation mode. Kate is willing to do anything to get Vincent back now that he's been taken by the enemy army of the living dead, but after being betrayed by Violette, she has no idea where they're keeping him or if he's even alive still. Also, it takes place in Paris, and while I love the forest, Paris gives it that foreign feel that really takes you out of your world. The Revenants series has been compared to Twilight, and in some ways I think that it's better (my main evidence being the absence of a Jacob-like character and a hybrid baby). I have loved this series from the very beginning, and, out of all the series that have ended or are going to end this year, this is definitely in the top three. 7/8/2023 0 Comments Simply Sexual by Kate PearceTo learn more about how and for what purposes Amazon uses personal information (such as Amazon Store order history), please visit our Privacy Notice.Įvery sexual fantasy is indulged at Madame Helene's Pleasure House-a brothel in Regency England where passion is freely given-and taken.Īnthony Sokorvsky's only rule in life is not to have any, especially when pleasures of the flesh are involved. Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her web of dreams and visions. It is the Olive Garden of books: you go there kind of as a joke, and once you are gorging yourself on a never-ending pasta bowl with salad and breadsticks you start to think ‘Hey, this is pretty good! Why don’t I eat here more often!?’ (This book came to my attention through NPR’s Guilty Pleasures series!) I know it sounds kind of corny and bad, but you really won’t think so once you get into it. It’s an all you can eat buffet of everything that makes books fun: sex violence, magic, aphrodisiac-addled male sex slaves, and of course, castration! The cast of male characters, Daemon, Lucivar, and Saetan (think ‘that Satan’ but less evil and more ‘I wear smoking jackets and shoes and socks’) live to serve their queen, and the queens have all the power. We talk about what color jewels we would wear and “rising to the killing edge.” When people ask us what the hell we are talking about we say “Black Jewels!” and the eye rolls we get are just one of the many reasons these books are awesome. My friend and I read The Black Jewels Trilogy at the same time and it has been fueling our conversations ever since. Includes Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness The reason i gave the book 2 stars is how the next scenario played out. I can't get enough of this series! I have to say this book started out well, lily escapes the ship and is now stuck with her kidnapper. It's time to take her destiny into her own hands. It's not like she would want his or anyone's rescue, anyway. Lofrayne is a far cry from a Prince Charming as which he seems to fancy himself-but then, Lily's no a damsel in distress, either. Alas, she is accompanied by the accursed Baron. When the ship is attacked by pirates, Lilian, helped by a chance acquaintance hoping to get his own revenge on her, manages to escape in a rowboat and reach the shore. You have to move, crawl on all fours, sail with every wind, use any chance you might get.and then, sooner or later, life will offer you its hand. How does one escape a vessel on the high seas, really? In the end, she is kidnapped, her carriage stopped on the way to Castle Taral, her guards killed, and the countess herself locked on a ship headed for Avester. But when Anthory, Baron Lofrayne, also shows up in the capital of Ativerna, Lilian has to admit-she hates him much more than she might ever hate the killer. A nobleman, he moves in the same circles as Miri and might be even talking to her. Here, letting down your guard is not an option.Ī serial killer is at large in Laveri. Enemies are everywhere-even the land itself is a foe. We chose to review TOC because it was very popular when it was released a few years ago and it has been referenced many times in mainstream news articles on health. Parts five and six describe what is purportedly wrong with our current diet and how to address these problems. Parts three and four discuss a “new model” of how obesity develops along with some sociological contributors to obesity. Parts one and two discuss how obesity became an epidemic and try to refute what it calls “myths” about obesity. From that beginning premise, the book deconstructs the conventional model of obesity and then re-educates the reader on how we get fat and what to do about it. The Obesity Code (TOC) begins by suggesting that conventional nutrition advice is wrong, and so is the conventional understanding of obesity. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Dopesick amazonAfter a few weeks, the miniature devotionals would disappear, and he would make his way back to the VFW. Addiction cycles back through at least four generations of my family. I know the pain-the sense of abandonment, embarrassment, and fear-of not being able to count on an addicted family member. After nearly a decade spent educating myself on the issue, even I am still getting a grasp on how insidious and complex addiction is, and to what degree it’s influenced who I am. Addiction is a heartbreaking, confounding illness, which is why so many loved ones, leaders, and institutions prefer to avert their eyes, hoping the problem will solve itself, or at least not touch them. “You should write a love story instead,” she said.
